VARSITY HEAD COACH & OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR/QBs COACH: Colin Thomas
Coach Thomas is entering in his 14th year of coaching high school football and his 6th on the Liberty Football coaching staff. This will be his 1st year as Head Coach after spending the last 5 years as the Offensive Coordinator. He was previously the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterback Coach at Dover HS in Delaware for 8 years. During his time as Offensive Coordinator at Liberty, Coach Thomas was part of a staff that won the 2019 6A State Championship. He has also coached baseball and boy’s and girls’ basketball at the high school level. Coach Thomas received his bachelor’s degree from Wesley College in Dover, DE and his master’s degree from Wilmington College. Coach Thomas teaches Physical Education at Liberty High School. He has been married to his loving wife Dana (a 7th grade teacher) for 4 years.
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR COACH: Travis Guiney
This is Coach Guiney’s first year coaching football at Liberty but he brings with him over 25 years of coaching experience. He was the Defensive Coordinator at Desert Edge High School for 9 years, and one year at Millennium High School. He played football for Utah State University (‘95-’99) and Arizona State University (‘91-’92) and Glendale Community College (‘92-’93). He is a graduate of Cactus High School where he played on the Offensive Line. He is a two time All State achiever, West Valley Player of the year and Sreet & Smith’s All American. He enjoys fishing, working out, watersports and anything football. He is married to his wife Lindsay and has three children, Ellison, Brock, and Quaid (twins). His biggest influences in his life is his high school football coach, Larry Fetkenhier, and his father Wally Guiney.
OFFENSIVE LINE COACH: Shawn Gloden
Coach Gloden is entering his third season as the offensive line coach at Liberty. Coach “Glo” is a Mesa CC alum and was a starter for the 1998 ACCAC/Region 1 Championship team at MCC. Following a successful playing career as a T-Bird, Gloden earned a scholarship to the University of Findlay, where he was a starter on the offensive line. Upon completing his UF career, Gloden returned to Arizona and accepted a position as the Offensive Line/Run Game Coordinator/Director of Sports Performance at Mesa CC from 1999-2002 & 2010-2017. In addition to his time at Mesa CC, Gloden coached single seasons at Phoenix College (2003), Chandler Hamilton HS (2007), and Mesa Skyline HS (2014). He and his wife, Raquel have three children: John 18, Elizabeth 15 & Victory 11.
DEFENSIVE LINE COACH: Joe Chacon
Coach Chacon is starting his 28th year coaching, with 20 years as a Head Coach and 8 years as an Assistant. He has coached baseball and football at various high schools and colleges in Colorado, including Division II and Division I-AA football at the University of Northern Colorado. Joe coached linebackers, scouted teams, and served as a recruiting assistant. Coach Chacon attended and played at Northwestern Community College. He graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science.
RUNNING BACKS/SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR COACH: Ian Gardner
Coach Gardner is beginning his 15th season coaching high school football. This will be his 1st season at Liberty High School coaching the varsity running backs and special teams. He is also teaching physical education and health at Liberty. Coach Gardner has coached at Desert Edge, Moon Valley, and Millennium prior to joining Liberty this year. Coach Gardner played college football at Buena Vista University, a Division III school in Storm Lake, IA, earning his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. He also received his master’s degree in education administration from Northern Arizona University in 2012. He is a 1999 graduate of Estherville-Lincoln Central High School in Estherville, IA. He and his wife Lorrie have three sons, Braylon (15), Jace (13) & TJ (10).
RECEIVERS COACH : Vince Nechero
Coach Nechero is in his 6th year of coaching football and track & field at Liberty High School. He attended and played football at Mountain Ridge High School. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Physical Education from Northern Arizona University. He currently teaches Physical Education at Liberty.
SAFETIES COACH: Ryan Desrochers
Coach Desrochers will be entering his 15th year of coaching high school football, and his 3rd year at Liberty. He began coaching in his home state of Rhode Island before moving to Arizona in 2009. Coach Desrochers earned a Bachelors degree in Education from Rhode Island College and a Masters degree in Athletic Administration from Concordia University Irvine. He currently teaches in the special education department at Liberty. Coach has been married to his wife Casey for almost 10 years and they have a 6-year-old daughter Caelyn, who is currently a Cub at Sunset Heights and cannot wait to be a Liberty Lion.
DEFENSIVE LINE/STRENGTH COACH: Brian Cherry
Coach Cherry is the Varsity defensive line coach and strength and conditioning coach. This is his fifth year coaching football at Liberty, having previously coached football for 14 years. Coach Cherry attended Moon Valley High School, played college football and track and field at Glendale Community College, attended the University of Arizona and competed on the track and field team. He graduated from Arizona State with a Masters degree in Secondary Education. He currently teaches strength and conditioning classes at Liberty. The two loves of his life are his daughters Miley and Morgan.
DEFENSIVE BACKS COACH : Bruno Johnson
Bruno Johnson has coached high school football for 15 years and 3 years of youth football. He played High School football for Warren High School in California. He played one year of college football at Long Beach City Junior College. He continued his football career playing 1 year of Arena Football for the Tucson Mirage.
TIGHTS ENDS COACH: Chris Raymond
Coach Raymond is entering his 5th Season as a coach at Liberty High School. His current responsibilities include Head Baseball Coach and Varsity Tight Ends Coach. Coach Raymond has served numerous roles in the football program ranging from JV Head Coach to Varsity Statistician. It is with great enthusiasm that Coach Raymond will get to help the Varsity program this Fall. Throughout the course of his Coaching career, through the hard work of his players, he has been named 2017 5A Baseball Coach of the Year, 2017 Region Coach of the Year, 2018 West Valley Coach of the Year. The Lions baseball Program also won the 2018 5A State Championship. Coach Raymond has been married for 15 years to his beautiful wife Christie. Their children Tristen (13 ) and Kenny (11) are excited to be future Lions.
HEAD COACH : Jake Boston
Coach Boston has been around the game of football since the age of 8 years old. He played football in the state of Nebraska where Saturday’s are always painted red. Outside of football, He is the father of 2 sons, Joell and Jalen, who keep him busy. Coach Boston works with the youth of our community as a Wellness coach. He enjoys working with children that have behavioral issues that are on the autistic spectrum. He is a licensed DDD foster parent with the help of his lovely wife, Raevin. He enjoys what he does as he is able to help young men build a brighter future for themselves.
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR/QBs COACH: Richard Ruiz
Coach Ruiz is the Offensive Coordinator for JV.Coach Ruiz has been Coaching football for over 20 yrs. He has coached youth football for 15 yrs and high school football for the last 7 yrs. Coach Ruiz loves coaching football because he enjoys watching these kids grow up and become young and respectful men in our society.
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR/LINBACKERS COACH: Robert 'Bo' Bohannan
Coach Bo has been coaching at Liberty for 8 years. He has coached Varsity football for over 20 years: Greenway HS Defensive Backs for 1 year, Northwest Christian HS Varsity Defensive Coordinator, Receivers, Running Backs for 11 years, and Moon Valley HS Defensive Safety and Running Backs for 2 years. Coach Bo played football 1969-1973 at Marmion Military Academy in Illinois, Varsity 2 years and an un-defeated Senior year. His played collegiate football at Eastern Illinois University 1973- 1977, where he was a 3 year starting Defensive Back. He is a technical trainer & business consultant. He has been married to his wife, Lourie for 39 years. They have 2 children, 2 granddaughters & 3 grandsons.
OFFENSIVE LINE COACH: Mike Thomas
Coach “Hoss” Thomas is entering his 26th year of coaching high school football and wrestling in Arizona. This is his second year coaching football at Liberty High School. He is a retired Master Sergeant from the United States Air Force. Coach Thomas earned a bachelor’s degree in management and a master’s degree in elementary education from Wayland Baptist University. He and his wife, Kim, recently celebrated 21 years of marriage.
DEFENSIVE BACKS COACH: Paul Gattie
Coach Gattie has coached at Liberty for 7 years and previously coached youth football for 15 years. He is a graduate of Dysart High School Class of 1988; where he played football and ran track. He was an All-State cornerback and a 5 time State Champion in Track and Field. He has been married to his wife, Ida, for 29 years and they have 3 children & twin grandsons.
FRESHMAN HEAD COACH: Ryan Logan
Coach Logan has coached football for 11 years at Liberty. Coach Logan is the Head Freshman Coach and Freshman Offensive Coordinator. He also assists with Varsity Running Backs and is the Varsity Offensive Signal Caller on game nights. During the football off season, Coach Logan is an Assistant Varsity Wrestling Coach for Liberty, as well as a volunteer Coach for the Lions Wrestling Club. In his 12 years of coaching wrestling, Coach Logan has helped lead the team to three state titles and two runner-up titles, with numerous individual state placers and champions. As an athlete, he earned 3 Varsity letters in football and 4 Varsity Letters in wrestling at Moon Valley High School. He played collegiate football and wrestled at Phoenix College before playing football at Eastern Washington University. Coach Logan works as a Transition Specialist at Liberty High School. He is married to Amanda, and they have two children, daughter Brooklyn and son Rico.
OFFENSIVE LINE COACH: Noel Guevara
Coach Guevara is in his 5th year of coaching football at Liberty. He is married to his wife, Stephanie, and they are proud parents of their sons Angel & Jonah.
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR/D-LINE COACH: Frank Espinoza
Coach Espinoza has coached every level of High School football for 15 years including Varsity Defensive Line, Linebackers, and Special Teams Coordinator; JV Head Coach, and Freshman Defensive Coordinator at Moon Valley HS. He has recruited and coached the Defensive Line at Glendale Community College for 3 years; each year being invited to play in the Valley of the Sun Bowl. Coach Espinoza is proud to say that he has coached many defensive linemen who have committed to four-year Universities to play college football and obtain degrees. Some of these Universities include Oregon State University, South Dakota State University, Missouri State University, Eastern Michigan University, and Northern State University. At Liberty High School, this will be Coach Espinoza’s second year coaching the Freshman Defensive Line and first as Defensive Coordinator; preparing every athlete for Friday Night Lights. He’s excited to be a Lion and WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS!!
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR/QBs COACH: Andrew Magri
Coach Magri is a Liberty Football Alumni. He was the starting Varsity Quarterback for 2 seasons. He is currently attending Glendale Community College where he is working towards his major in Business and his minor in Sociology. This is his 3rd year coaching high school football. He is super excited to be a part of Liberty Lions Football again.
OFFENSIVE LINE COACH: Enrique Guevara
This is Coach Guevara’s second year coaching at Liberty High School. He has coached youth football for 5 years and was a volunteer coach for a youth wrestling club. He was a 2016 graduate from Apollo High School where he lettered in football & wrestling. He was first team all district & first section offensive line in football. He was a section champion in wrestling in heavyweight weight class. He was also MVP his Senior year of high school. He also coaches freshman wrestling at Liberty.
DEFENSIVE LINE COACH: Steve Tuskan
Coach Tuskan joined the Liberty Lions Coaching staff in 2015. Coach Tuskan previously was an assistant defensive line coach under legendary Coach Bell for the previous 2 seasons. A near native of Arizona, Tuskan attended elementary, high school and college in the Phoenix area. Tuskan received his Associates degree from Glendale Community College and his Bachelors and Master’s degrees in Engineering Technology from Arizona State University. He has worked as a Vehicle Accident Forensic Consultant for over 31 years. He and his wife Marie have 2 daughters, both of whom attended and graduated from Liberty High School.
RECEIVERS COACH: Tony Pina
This is Coach Pina’s second year of coaching at Liberty High School. He coaches the Freshmen Receivers. Liberty is a very special program with great young men. I am blessed to be a part of a great coaching staff and program. GO LIONS!
WIDE RECEIVERS COACH: Jace Johnson
This will be Coach Johnson’s first year coaching at Liberty High School. He will be coaching the wide receivers. He played Football and Baseball at Liberty, as a wide receiver and defensive back. He is excited to get his coaching career started at his alma mater!
LINEBACKERS COACH: Lou Guerra
Coach Lou is in his first year of coaching at Liberty High School. He previously coached for two years at Copper Canyon High School. He has coached for 20 years at every level of youth football as an assistant and head coach. He is a graduate of JC Harmon High School, Class of 1984, where he played football and basketball. He has been married to his wife Jeanette for 25 years and has 6 children and 4 grandchildren.
